From Clash Detection to Site Execution:
Extending BIM Coordination Beyond Design
UBBIM Executive Director Edwin Jesu Dass delivered this talk at Malaysia BIM Day 2026 in Putrajaya, speaking on behalf of the Association of Construction Project Managers Malaysia (ACPM).
BIM coordination is something our industry does well — during design. Models federate on a cycle, clash detection runs every time, and there is a meeting on Thursday. Then construction starts, and all of it stops. This session argued that the most expensive clashes are not geometric at all: a method statement requiring what the permit does not authorise, a design-stage hazard that never reaches the site safety plan, a claim the project's own records will not support. Using a fictional Malaysian hospital project with deliberately planted faults, it demonstrated continuity checks running as a daily cadence across records a project already keeps — and closing the loop back into the model through IFC and BCF.
